Texas School Survey: Why are twice as many San Antonio students using marijuana than widely sold tobacco cigs?

Texas School Survey: Why are twice as many San Antonio students using marijuana than widely sold tobacco cigs?
Cigarettes are bad enough but twice as many San Antonio kids using marijuana??? It appears marijuana is more widely available than I thought and our marijuana laws are useless, especially along the border. 7.3% of students in grades 7-9 reported past month use of tobacco cigarettes compared to 13.9% reporting past month use of marijuana. As a teenager it's so much easier to get pot than cigarettes or beer. No one asks for your id.

2
marijuana is not nearly as bad as cigarettes. the kids are just smarter

Apples and oranges comparison. Replace cigs with alcohol.

One its not as bad for you, two it has a much better effect and three we live in south Texas. You're practically in Mexico.

5
Because San Antonio kids are smart, they know weed is a much better high than beer or nicotine.

Carol, It's easy to see you're upset. And maybe with good reason. But come on! 13.9%?? That's hardly a staggering number. That means 86.1% of kids aren't smoking. I'd be pretty proud of that if I were a parent or an official in the ISD down there.

You have to consider that survey results often underreport marijuana and cigarette use and they are usually conducted in the spring time, when many kids are studying for major exams. In any case, I think this survey shows how well we've done with our anti-smoking campaign and regulating the tobacco market and the school district should be proud of that. Back in the nineties, cigarette use was far more popular among San Antonio kids than marijuana. Nevertheless, it is disturbing that nearly 40 percent of San Antonio students have ever used marijuana by the time they reach the 9th grade compared to 23 percent for McAllen students.

That's a stupid question. Why is that even an issue? Good for them for smoking nearly harmless marijuana instead of cigarettes.
